Hey everyone! 🙂
I realize a significant time has passed since Halloween and everyone is currently fighting over the election, but I don’t really care. I have decided that today, I wanted to tell you about my Halloween costume!
Spoiler alert for Fairytail, you’ve been warned.
I think I actually might have traumatized a few people with my costume because 1. I’ve never had brightly colored hair and 2. I’ve never had a tattoo. I’ve always had plain brown hair and plain brown eyes (until recently but that is another story). I don’t even have any piercings and I don’t wear a lot of makeup or jewelry, so having blue hair and a tattoo was a huge change from my normal.
As we were getting my costume ready, we gave some sneak peaks just to see how people would react…
The blue hair is actually a wig that we purchased from Walmart. We didn’t get any new clothing for the outfit, we just used the clothing I had that matched the character best. In the next picture you can see there is a blue skirt that is most like what the character I chose wears.
The tattoo is actually a gel eyeliner that my husband drew freehand onto my thigh. There were a few people who thought it was real so props to my husband for his awesome drawing skills! The tattoo is a symbol from our favorite anime show called Fairytail. I decided to dress up as one of the women off of the show and her name is Juvia.
I didn’t choose her character because she is some “strong” (Read: obnoxious) female lead. I actually tend to be extremely frustrated by the sheer number of horribly pushy, belligerent and rude female characters in shows these days. Juvia is actually not even a main character in the story most of the time and she has a quiet, meek personality (unless you get near something she wants) that isn’t showy or attention-seeking.
She started out as an evil character but converted over after a battle with one of the main characters named Gray. Juvia ended up falling in love with Gray, even though he is literally and figuratively very icy (he uses ice magic). Juvia’s magic is water and her body consists of water, so when she is sad or depressed, it rains.
Sometimes she isn’t taken very seriously by the other characters because she is primarily known for her love for Gray. She routinely gets angry if she thinks one of the other women are hitting on him and is fiercely protective of him.
Her and Gray went through a difficult plot twist with Gray’s father and it was the first time Gray really leaned on her in any capacity. There was one scene in the show that really made me love her and is the reason why I chose her for my character for Halloween.
At one point, Juvia and Gray are forced into chains that are secured around their neck, attached to each other and told by an enemy that only one of them will escape because in order to be realized from the magic chains, one would have to die.
They were told to fight each other and their wills were essentially being controlled into doing so, but in order to keep each other from hurting, they both impaled themselves in an attempt to commit suicide so that the other would be free.
They both tried to sacrifice themselves to save the other and, once Juvia realized that Gray had done the same thing she had, she resolved to use her last bits of remaining strength to enact a special blood transfusion with her own body in order to keep Gray alive.
They both end up living (people rarely die in this show), but her dedication, as a female character (Gray saved her once too), to self-sacrifice to the point of death in order to keep Gray safe is something that made a huge impression on me. Self-sacrifice is something that is highly undervalued by our society right now and dare I say even scorned. But it is something Christ modeled for us when he died, and I love seeing it as a theme in popular culture. That’s why I chose to dress up as her for Halloween.
So, now you know!
Who did you dress up as for Halloween?
